Edward Elric stands at about 5ft 4in tall and weighs about 110 pounds. He has a toned, somewhat muscular build. His hair his blond, and short in the front, with a long pony tail in the back. His eyes are yellow, and his face is usually serious looking, and looks noticeably different when he smiles or laughes. His face is rather comedic to others when he is mad. Edward's right and left leg were lost in a bad transmutation, and they have been entirely replaced with automail, or metal, limbs. They are entirely functional however, to every degree a regular human arm and leg would be, except for the complete lack of sensation in them.

Although the entire concept has remained essentially the same from his childhood, Edwards outfit has changed in several Key areas. Instead of two pieces, his shirt is now a single black piece, with silver lining along all sides, and a large zipper down the middle. He has non-extravagant black pants, and slim black boots, outlined in red. He usually wears a red cloak which covers most of his body. It has the insignia of his Teacher, Izumi, upon it.
Personality:
Edward Elric is a young alchemical prodigy. He has a bright mind, an unyielding willpower, and a loud mouth. Ed's primary motivation throughout the series is to return his younger brother, Alphonse to his original body, which was lost in a botched human transmutation. Edward, despite his occasional bouts of immaturity, is a selfless boy that gains a reputation as a "hero of the people" throughout his youth. Notably, he doesn't seem concerned about returning his own arm and leg, instead focusing entirely on Al's suffering. He despises authority, an agnostic who enjoys nothing more than serving up Robin Hood-esque justice to people in need.

Ed's strong personality is revealed most when others make jokes about his height. He doesn't tolerate phrases such as "pipsqueak", "half-pint", "bean sprout", "short stuff", and he becomes so enraged by such quips that he usually screams back with a highly exaggerated version of the insult that is nowhere near the scale of the original remark. When Ed is not out on a mission for the Philosopher's Stone or just an odd job for Roy Mustang, he is a kind, laidback person. However, regardless of whether or not he is on the job, Ed can hold a grudge for an eternity, and will go to extreme lengths to get an apology. Ed is extremely idealistic--almost to a fault--and strongly believes in the theory of "Equivalent Exchange". He regards religion and superstition cynically, instead believing that alchemy and science are the true saviors of humanity. He shows little remorse in defeating the false prophet Cornello in Liore and "taking away the hope of the people", although he does show more compassion when dealing with the religious Ishbalans also he does show respect to people's religons and beliefs.

Description:
Using Alchemic Energy, this jutsu gives the user the ability to
manipuate the molecules of matter around them. There are limitless
possiblities, but the user is limited by the amount of knowledge he
has, and cannot change something without a basic understanding of it.
Unlike Chakra, this power does not grant the user the ability to simply
create matter and energy willy nilly. The user can only manipulate what
he is already given. he cannot create giant balls of fire at a whim,
nor can he summon giant waves of water from his mouth. He cannot
shunshin or use replacement technique. Nor can he make himself invisible or fly.

Some of Edward's Common uses of Alchemy and various example of each

Creation(or rather supposed creation, it's really just manipulating a substance, such as the earth, or metal into something else):

Staff. Using The earth, he transmutates the atoms of earth into metals, and forms a staff. This is an example of Tier Three Alchemy-

Another form of his staff, this one uses some of the extra metal on his chest plate, and the metal on his forearm and shoulder


Wall:
Edward can erect walls from any solid substance to stop attacks.


Cage:
Edward can create a cage or other binds from any solid substance. He can then wrap them around an opponent and solidify them when neccesary.



Rock Jettison:
A more advanced application of creation, Edward will use his transmutation to erect the ground beneath him up from beneath him, farther and farther into the air. He can either use a small amount or a large amount, depending on time and neccesity


Canon: Using whatever materials he has, Edward will create a functioning canon to blast his enemies away


Basic Manipulation(changing matter in a more obvious fashion):

State change: Edward can change the state of some objects if the energy cost isn't too high. One such example is water to ice or to steam and vice versa in any direction.


Repair: If something gets broken, Edward can repair the object if he has all of the parts. Though shown with a picture, edward obviously doesn't need one:


Arm Blade(edward changes the matter in his right arm, changing the medal on his forearm[he has a little extra there] into a blade that extends past his arm. There are several forms of this, and he can change it to suit his needs)


Air:
Shockwave: Edward will use alchemy to liquify the water in the air, reduce it's volume, and then vaporize it. This produces a shockwave, and flash of light, which comes from the heat of the forced compression needed to maintain entropy.

Animation:
Ed Can Animate statues, suits of armors or other objects resembling humans and have them do simple attacks, but not alchemy. This would be, more or less, his equivalent to a summoning.


Background Information
Early Childhood
Edward was born to Trisha and Hohenheim Elric in Risembool. He grew up knowing only his mother and younger Brother, as their father left the entire family at a young age. Al and Edward grew up detesting their father, but eventually decided to learn alchemy. They progressed quickly, seeing how they only had books and did not have any teacher, originally. Edward was always a bit better at Alchemy than Al was, though both were definetely skilled for their age. Growing, up, their most notable friend was Winry Rockbell, grandaughter of Risembool's Automail Shop. The three were good friends, but Winry did not approve of them using alchemy because of what happened to her parents, who faught against state alchemists in the Ishbalan Massacre.

Their mother had been grief stricken from Hohenheim's departure from their life, and she took ill, most likely with depression. She faught it for a good long while, but eventually died, with her two sons at her bedside. Ed and Al were of course grief stricken by this, and they trained in Alchemy even harder.. because they were going to attempt to revive her. They eventually realized, however, that they would not be able to learn the necessary knowledge on their own. They sought out a teacher, and found one during an attempt to help the barricade the village's levee's against an advancing river. Izumi Curtis appeared and used alchemy (notably without a circle) to create huge stone barricades. She fell ill from a condition explained later in the series. Ed and Al found her in her hospital bed and asked to become her apprentices. She grudgingly agreed to give them the opportunity to prove themselves.

Teacher Arc-

Upon Arrival at their Teacher's residence, they were exiled to an island for a month. It was there that they had to survive for one month, without the use of alchemy. With some difficulty, the two brothers succeeded in this, and learned a valuable lesson about life. It tought them that they were just a small part of the entire universe, and that to make a difference they had to affect those around them. It tought them that all is one, and one is all. More than that though, surviving meant that Izumi Curtis had to take them as a teacher.

Under Izumi curtis, they learned a great deal about alchemy, all of the things they never really knew or understood. Their teacher also taught them morals and standards, which they were to uphold. She also contributed greatly to the brother's knowledge of self defense. She taught them both about some form of mixed martial arts to the point where they became excellent fighters. After their training was finished, they returned home to do what they thought they earlier could not do. To resurrect their mother.

Resurrection-
When they returned, they waisted no time. They gathered all of the necessary ingredients- Every single chemical and compound that made up the average adult human male. They drew out a complex archaic circle, and put their mother's ashes in the center. The two brothers believed themselves to be ready, and fed Alchemic energy into the circle. A golden light envelopped the two, and they got the first part of the ritual complete. But Human Transmutation is an incomplete science. There was always a missing link that caused failure, and despite the brothers' prowess, this was no different. The Transmutation went horribly wrong, and Al's body was entirely lost, as was Ed's Left leg. Doing so put Ed infront of the gate of truth, where he was bestowed with an incredible amount of alchemic knowledge. He had the knowledge to recover his brother's soul, at the very least. Thinking of equivalent exchange, Ed offered his right arm as a sacrifice, and used it as collatoral to seal his brother's soul in a piece of steel armor.

The Result was an animated shell of armor with Al's soul in it, and Ed, passed out from bloodloss on the floor. Thinking fast, Al took Ed to the Rockbells where he was treated for his injuries. He later decided that he could not survive without limbs, and payed the Rockbells to make him an Auto Mailic arm and Leg. They did so, and installed it through a painful process of connecting nerve ending to wire. The result, however, was a fully functioning body. He was visited by Colonel Roy Mustang at his bedside, who told him to become a state alchemist if he wished to full fill his needs. Al and Ed later set off to Central to do just that, so that they could have knowledge and funding at their hands so they could create a philosophers stone. With it, they could restore their bodies.

Journies and Departure-

Edward and Al did go to Central, and Edward learned of his ability to transmute without a circle. It was because of this, and passing the first test, that he was inducted into the State Alchemists under the ironic name "Full Metal". He and Al would travel far over the land on various missions of the the state, and he gained a reputation as the Alchemist of the people. This was because in his exploits he proved himself having a kind heart, bringing evil to justice and liberating the oppressed in his search for the philosopher's stone.

As his journies reached their climax, he learned of the hommunculi, evil alchemic creatures, and their exploits to have Ed create a philosophers stone. As he progressed though, Ed eventually learned that Al himself was the Philosopher's stone all along. Edward used Al as the stone to return Al's body to normal, and Al was cast through the gate, into this dimension of ninja.

Reception and Adaptation-
He arrived in a bang, in the middle of Sunagakure (Which ironically, or sensibly, appears as one big circle). It was in the home of a kind couple who nursed Ed back to health. For days and weeks he struggled to adapt to society, and eventually sought out the Kazekage. Ed was asked to demonstrate his skills to the Kazekage, and did so. The Kazekage found them worthy of a ninja, and that Ed would be qualified for the Academy and the chance to be a genin.

Edward sailed through the Academy, but relied on Alchemy to accomplish feats, as he did not have enough chakra to do even the most basic of techniques. He passed the written exams with ease, and the practicals as well and became a Genin at the age of 16.
